Our Kick Off Event held in May 2016:
- Art Exhibit: Local artists created original pieces that touched on the topic of human trafficking and were on display in 12 venues throughout downtown Redwood City for 6 weeks preceding the event
- “Peep” Art: “Peep” an original art piece created by Artist Jonathan Fung in a shipping container is displayed on Courthouse Square for 5 days preceding the event
- Student-led march: Local high school students from social justice clubs create signs and march downtown distributing information about human trafficking and extending invitations to the event
- Rally: A number of diverse speakers addressed the attendees: State Senator Jerry Hill, San Mateo County Supervisor Warren Slocum, San Mateo County Assistant County Manager Mike Callagy, City of Redwood City Mayor John Seybert, Poet/Playwright/Social Justice Performer Regina Evans; Filmmaker Tony Gapastione, Artist Jonathan Fung and SMC Safe and Supportive Schools Administrator Jeneé Littrell as M.C.
- Survivor Art Exhibit: Art created by survivors of human trafficking was on display in the rotunda San Mateo County Historical Museum
- Courtroom Docket: A panel discussion takes place before a standing-room only audience takes place in historic Courtroom A, sponsored by the Cypress Lawn Foundation, and featured a panel of experts: Mike Brosnan, San Mateo County Human Trafficking Program Director; Denicia Cormier, Social Worker Supervisor with San Mateo County Children and Family Services; Catherine Egli, M.D., Pediatric Endocrinologist with Kaiser Permanente; Poet/Playwright/Survivor Regina Evans, Poet/Playwright/Social Justice Performer; Betty Ann Hagenau, founder of BAATC, Moderator Warren Dale
- Dramatic Film Script Reading: Actors conducted a dramatic reading of the new short film script titled “Neighbor” written and produced by local filmmaker Tony Gapastione
- Local Service Organizations Represented: Local service organizations are available
- Fair Trade Shopping: Heavenly Treasures, a Fair Trade Federation member, offered fair trade for sale
